Neuromuscular disorders
Information on conditions affecting muscle, motor nerves or communication between nerves and muscles.
What are neuromuscular disorders?
These conditions affect nerves controlling muscles, muscle tissue or the neuromuscular junction. They include myasthenia gravis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), muscular dystrophies and certain neuropathies. They are very different conditions that require specific diagnoses.
Symptoms and diagnosis
Depending on the condition, symptoms may include weakness, fatigability, muscle wasting, cramps or swallowing and breathing difficulties. Assessment can involve neurological examination, electromyography, immune testing or genetic studies as appropriate.
Treatment and care
Treatment varies widely. Some conditions have disease-specific immune therapies; others require rehabilitation, respiratory or nutritional support and multidisciplinary follow-up. Treatment must reflect the individual diagnosis.
Clinical research
Our unit participates in research on myasthenia, ALS and other neuromuscular diseases. Studies are grouped by area while their precise condition remains identifiable in each study record.
