Movement disorders

Research into Parkinson’s disease, tremor, dystonia and other disorders affecting movement control.

What are movement disorders?

These neurological conditions can cause slowed or reduced voluntary movement, or involuntary movements such as tremor, tics and muscle contractions. They include Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, ataxia and other syndromes with distinct characteristics.

Symptoms and diagnosis

Features vary by condition and may include tremor, slowness, stiffness, gait changes, abnormal movements or impaired coordination. Clinical history and neurological examination are central; additional tests depend on the person’s presentation.

Treatment and quality of life

Management may combine medicines, physiotherapy, tailored exercise, multidisciplinary support and, in selected situations, neurostimulation techniques. Care depends on the precise diagnosis and daily impact.

Clinical research

Studies explore emerging therapies, symptom progression, long-term safety and quality-of-life outcomes in Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
