Stroke and cerebrovascular disease

Recognising stroke symptoms and understanding prevention, treatment and recovery.

What is a stroke?

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked (ischaemic stroke) or when a blood vessel ruptures (haemorrhagic stroke). Both require emergency assessment because brain tissue may be damaged.

Recognising symptoms

Warning signs can include sudden weakness or numbness on one side, difficulty speaking, changes in vision, and sudden loss of balance or coordination. If a stroke is suspected, call 112 immediately in Spain. Rapid action is crucial.

Prevention and recovery

Managing blood pressure, cardiovascular risk factors and appropriate preventive treatment helps reduce risk. Rehabilitation after stroke supports mobility, communication and independence while secondary prevention aims to reduce recurrence.

Clinical research

Studies may focus on secondary prevention, diagnostic approaches, functional recovery and detection of underlying causes such as atrial fibrillation.
