This Friday, May 20, is the International Day of Clinical Trials. Clinical trials are research studies that aim to improve the quality of life of patients affected by a disease. Each study gives us the answers to scientific questions in order to find better ways to prevent, examine, diagnose or treat a pathology. In most cases a new treatment is compared with one that is already available. There are various research groups dedicated in body and soul, that is why there is visibility to all the staff that is dedicated to doing this work. Clinical trials are safe, voluntary studies in which people who want to participate, apart from contributing to the possible improvement of the quality of life of millions of people, are in a situation in which they are examined more thoroughly due to the requirements of the protocols of the studies, in no case, is harmful to the person who participates, since the ethical codes are followed, the Helsinki Declaration as well as their own laws . Historically, the date commemorates the first clinical trial performed by Dr. James Lind in 1747, who laid the basis for clinical research, in that first trial was to identify the absence of vitamin D as the cause of scurvy that affected the sailors of the British Navy. On a trip in Salisbury, he divided 12 sick sailors into six couples and each of them provided a different supplement in his diet: cider, vitrilic elixir (diluted sulfuric acid), vinegar, sea water, two oranges and a lemon, or a purgante mixture. Only the two sailors who took the fruit improved. The importance of Lind's study is that it was successful in controlling the variables of the experiment so that all subjects were in similar conditions: compare equally with the same. He chose patients with similar symptoms, kept them in the same place and provided them with a common diet, apart from supplements, although without a control group. Each clinical trial has a protocol or action plan to be carried out. The plan describes what will be done in the study, how it will be done and why each part of the study is necessary. Each study has its own rules about who can participate. Clinical research over the past sixty years has made it possible for life expectancy in Europe to have increased by about 10 years.
